The grading cost breakdown
PSA Economy: $50-100 per card, 6-8 weeks turnaround. For bulk modern submissions.
PSA Regular: $150-200, 4-6 weeks. Standard choice for most modern hits.
PSA Express: $300+, 1-2 weeks. Only if the card is already worth $500+.
BGS (Beckett): Similar pricing, 4-8 weeks. Better slab aesthetics (border color grading), more collector preference for vintage and high-end modern. Compare all grading companies before you submit.
When grading makes sense
Grade if: Raw value × (Expected Grade Multiplier) - Grading Cost > Raw Sale Price
Example: You hit a 2024 rookie auto worth $150 raw. PSA 9 of that card sells for $400. Grading costs $150. The math: $150 × 2.7x - $150 = $255 profit. Worth it.
Counter-example: You hit a 2025 rookie auto worth $80 raw. PSA 9 might be $180 (2.25x). Grading costs $150. The math: $80 × 2.25x - $150 = $30 profit. Too tight. Sell raw. Use our interactive grading ROI calculator to make this decision faster.
The grade multiplier depends on four things
1. Player & card scarcity: A LeBron rookie 1/1? Grade it, grade it, grade it. A random 2025 base auto of a prospect who might flame out? Sell raw.
2. Card era: Vintage cards (pre-1990) grade multipliers are 3-5x. Modern cards (2020+) are 1.5-2.5x. Older cards preserve condition better relative to raw sales (because everything is weak condition), so grading has bigger ROI. Learn what each PSA grade means to estimate your card's potential.
3. Current condition: A card with visible wear (centering, corners) will grade 7-8 instead of 9. The value jump from 8 to 9 is 2-3x. The jump from 7 to 8 is 1.2-1.5x. So if you think your card is a 7 or 8, the ROI is worse.
4. Wait time: Grading takes weeks. During that time, the player's value might crash (injury, trade, slump). Factor in the risk that the value depreciates while your card is in a box.
Pro strategy: grade selectively
Grade only: 1/1s, 1/10 numbered cards, rookie autos of players who just broke out, and cards worth $300+. Pass on: commons, bulk autos, and anything you're not sure will hold value in 6 weeks.
